We designed boxes that stack like building blocks, in orange, mint and lilac, with the street name printed big on every side.

Candles you can build with

Matchbox makes candles that smell like the streets around their workshop: fig trees, warm stone, a bakery at six in the morning.

The problem

The candles hid in brown boxes on gift-shop shelves, and nobody could tell Rua da Saudade from Rua do Sol.

The process

We let the boxes play.

  1. Stackable cubes. Every box is the same size, so shops can build towers, walls and pyramids with them.

  2. A colour per street. Orange for sunny streets, mint for shady ones, lilac for the late-night ones.

  3. Names you can read from the door. The street name runs round every side, in letters as big as the box allows.

The result

Shops started building box towers in their windows, and the candles began selling in sets of three.

Our favourite still smells like the bakery downstairs.
