We built a simple cover system: a big LUME, one quiet photo and a thin rule, so every book looks like part of the same shelf.

Books that look like a family

Lume is two editors, one cat and a lot of bookshelves. They publish essays, short novels and a magazine about rooms.

The problem

Their books were wonderful and looked nothing alike, so on a bookshop table nobody knew they came from the same publisher.

The process

We made the shelf the design.

  1. One big name. LUME sits at the top of every cover, so a row of spines reads like a sentence.

  2. Quiet pictures. One photo per cover, picked by the editors, with lots of space around it.

  3. Paper that matches. Cards, envelopes and folders use the same grid, so even an invoice looks like a book.

The result

Bookshops started giving Lume its own shelf, and readers began collecting the full set.

The cat has not commented.
